Humboldt Resident's Lucky Day leads to $10,000 Top Prize
Luck seemed to be on Michael McGuire's side last
Thursday. Not only did the 21-year-old Humboldt resident find
an error that could have cost his employer $10,000, but later that
evening he won a $10,000 top prize playing a Kansas Lottery $2
Lucky Lines instant scratch ticket!
"It was a crazy day," said McGuire about his lucky day. "I
just started buying lottery tickets about four months ago and never
expected to win this much so soon. I always buy tickets from
the same store and the same clerk. That night as I was
discussing the price of Slim Jims with the clerk, I decided to buy
two of the Lucky Lines tickets. I usually buy a $20 game, but
I'm glad I didn't that night. After buying the most expensive
Slim Jim there is and my tickets, I went home."
Once he arrived home, McGuire scratched his tickets and couldn't
believe what he was seeing.
"I thought I had won $1,000 at first," said McGuire. "But
after looking over the ticket again, I realized it was worth
$10,000! I couldn't believe it. I freaked out and
started running around the house."
After calming down, McGuire went back to the store and had the
clerk scan his ticket twice.
"I didn't get much sleep," said McGuire. "I called my boss
and asked for the day off so I could claim my prize. He was
very happy for me especially since I saved the company
$10,000. What are the odds of me saving the company $10,000
and winning that same amount the same day?"
"I always told the clerk if she sold me a big winner, I would
share some with her," said McGuire. "She's always at the
store and works hard. We can't wait to surprise her."
McGuire, who works for PostRock Energy Corporation, also plans
to pay bills with his winnings.
The lucky ticket was purchased at Pump N Pete's 31, located at
317 S. 9th St. in Humboldt.
