Hutchinson Resident Throws a Ringer and Wins $10,000
Malissa Cullison of Hutchinson threw a ringer playing the Kansas
Lottery's Horseshoes instant scratch game and has won a cash prize
worth $10,000! Horseshoes is one of six instant scratch games
offered in the Lottery's $20 Instant
Scratch Game Book. The game went on sale in
December and offers players a chance to win a $100,000 top
"I don't often buy lottery tickets," said Cullison. "I
certainly never buy $20 tickets, but something just felt right
about this game."
The lucky winner purchased her Instant Game Book Tuesday evening
and took it home to scratch. She matched the ringer
illustrated on the Horseshoes game and instantly won a $10,000 cash
"I thought I had won a prize, but I wasn't sure how much it
was," said Cullison. "I showed my ticket to my husband
Rolando and told him I thought I had won $10,000. Of course,
he didn't believe me."
"I thought she was lying," said Rolando Cullison, who
accompanied his wife to Topeka to claim her prize. "Then I
realized she was crying and knew right away she wasn't joking."
After having the ticket checked at a nearby convenience store,
Cullison was thrilled when the Lottery terminal read, "Sign back of
ticket. Claim at Lottery."
"I was very relieved and happy when the machine showed I had to
claim my prize at the Lottery," said Cullison. "I signed
back of the ticket and put it in the side pocket of my
purse. I bet I checked my purse every 10 minutes to make sure
it was still there."
The Cullisons, who have five children between them, plan to pay
bills with their winnings.
"We've had a lot of bad luck recently," said
Cullison. "Hopefully this is a good sign and our luck is
