Resident Wins $20,000 Top Prize playing "Her Game"
Dawne Morris refers to the Kansas Lottery's $2 Bonus Crossword
instant scratch tickets as "her game," and we can understand
why. The Tonganoxie resident has won two $2,000 cash prizes
playing the game, and yesterday claimed a top prize worth $20,000!
Crossword tickets are my favorite game to play because I feel I
get my money's worth since they take so long to play," said
Morris. "I've been so lucky playing them, I always refer to
them as being 'my game.'"
The lucky winner said she plays Bonus Crossword tickets every
day and was shocked to discover she had won a top prize.
"You always hope to win a big one, but when you do it's hard to
believe," said Morris. "I was afraid I had made a mistake
when scratching my ticket. As I revealed words, I would write
them down on a piece of paper. When I counted 10 words, I
checked my ticket again to make sure I hadn't accidentally
scratched off a wrong letter. I was so excited my heart was

"I recently had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder," said
Morris. "Since I'm right handed, I had a hard time scratching
the ticket and had to tape it down to keep it from moving. I
had to set my salt and pepper shakers on each corner, too.
That's why I was concerned I might have made a mistake on the
After returning home from a trip to Topeka, Morris' husband
Randy didn't believe her when she said she had won a $20,000 top
prize and needed him to drive her to Topeka to claim her prize.
"She told me we needed to make a trip to Topeka, and I told her
no way because I had just made the trip," said Randy. "When
she showed me her ticket and explained it was a $20,000 winner, I
didn't believe her. I went back to the store where she
purchased them from and had it checked. When they said we had
to claim the prize in Topeka, I was still hesitant in believing it
was a $20,000 winner. I actually didn't believe it until
Lottery officials said it was true when we claimed the prize."
Morris and her husband, who have been married 37 years, have
three grown sons and one granddaughter. She has worked as a
"lunch lady" for USD 458 for 14 years. She plans to treat her
sister to a trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas next month with part
of her winnings and the rest will be saved.
The winning ticket was purchased at B & J Country Mart,
located at 319 Ridge in Tonganoxie.
