One-a-Day Purchase leads to $25,000 Top Prize for Gardner
According to William "Randy" VanSlyke of Gardner, he just
began playing Kansas Lottery games within the last six months,
buying one instant scratch ticket each morning with a cup of
coffee. Lucky for VanSlyke it didn't take long for his daily
routine to pay off. Yesterday, the 51-year-old revealed a
$25,000 top prize playing a $5 Queen of Hearts instant scratch
I never buy more than one ticket each day," explained
VanSlyke. "The most I've won before now was $50. When I
realized how much I had won on this ticket, I couldn't believe it.
I kept looking at the ticket over and over to make sure I was
reading it right. Finally, I decided to sign the back of it and
went back inside the store to have it checked."
When VanSlyke went back into the store he asked the store clerk
who sold him the winning ticket to check it for him.
"The gal who sold me the ticket was getting ready to finish her
shift and never looked up when I walked up to her," said
VanSlyke. "She told me the other gal was going to have to
help me since she was doing paperwork. When I explained I
thought I had won $25,000 on the ticket she had sold to me, she was
as surprised as I was and decided to help me out. After
scanning it, she told me I had to claim my ticket at Lottery
headquarters in Topeka, so I knew I must have won $25,000."
Still a little unsure of his win, VanSlyke called his wife Nikke
while making the trip to Topeka to claim his prize.
"When I told her how much I had won, she didn't believe me,"
VanSlyke said laughing. "Even when I called her from the
Lottery office she was still was a little hesitant in believing
The VanSlykes, who have been married 11 years, have one child
and three foster children. They plan to use their winnings to
help pay for a trip to Disney World this fall.
The winning ticket was purchased at Fuel Expresso 3, located at
23000 W. 83rd St. in Shawnee.
