Abilene Resident hoping for Non-Winning Ticket - Wins $10,000 Cash Prize!

Christina "Tina" Rankin had an unforgettable birthday this year.  The 48-year-old Abilene resident celebrated her birthday by purchasing a Kansas Lottery $10 Cadillac Riches instant scratch ticket and winning a $10,000 cash prize playing the game!

"My birthday is August 22, and to celebrate I bought a $2 ticket and ended up winning a small amount and decided to cash it in for a different ticket," explained Rankin.  "I never buy $10 tickets, but I thought I would give it a try.  The store clerk suggested I buy the Cadillac Riches game since it had a second-chance drawing so I could mail in my ticket if it didn't win.  I figured I'd give it try and was really hoping I would have a non-winning ticket because I wanted to win the Cadillac."

Although Rankin didn't win the Cadillac, she was thrilled with the $10,000 cash prize she did win.

"After I bought the ticket, I took it to work and scratched it," said Rankin.  "I started at the bottom of the ticket and worked my way to the top.  At the top, I had to match one of my winning numbers to any of the winning numbers to win, which I did, but I hadn't scratched the prize amount to see how much I had won.  I figured I had probably won a free ticket or something, and was a little upset because I wanted a non-winning ticket to send in for the second-chance drawing.  When I started scratching off the amount I won, I saw $10 and figured I had won $10.  As I kept scratching I revealed more zeros and couldn't believe what I was seeing.  Everything seemed surreal.  It was like I was in slow motion."

Since she was at work, the lucky winner showed her winning ticket to a co-worker who likes to play lottery games.

"I wanted someone that is familiar with playing scratch tickets to verify how much I had won," said Rankin.  "When he agreed I had won $10,000, the first thing he told me was to sign the back of my ticket.  Everyone has told us that good things happen to good people.  I sent the store a Thank You card for selling me the ticket and tipped the store clerk who sold me the ticket $100."

In addition to working for Smart Insurance in Abilene, Rankin has been a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters for several years.  She and her husband Larry are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary today.  They have two grown children and two grandchildren.  The couple plans to use their winnings towards an anniversary trip to Maine in October.

The winning ticket was purchased at West Stop, located 420 N. Buckeye in Abilene.
