Wichita Resident Wins Mega Prize with Megaplier

Shellene Palmer of Wichita only plays the Kansas Lottery's Mega Millions game once a month, but when she does she always spends an extra $1 per play for the Megaplier option.  The 42-year-old single mother of five is glad she added the Megaplier option to the ticket she purchased May 31.  Palmer matched four numbers plus the Mega Ball on her $10 Quick Pick ticket, winning $10,000.  Since the Megaplier number was three for that night's drawing her winnings were tripled, bringing her total winnings to $30,000!

"I've always said adding Megaplier to Mega Millions or Power Play to Powerball is where the big money is," said Palmer.  "Although it costs a little extra it's worth it when you win."

Palmer, who is a big believer in creating good karma, grew up with her mom always saying, "You don't know if God has angels here on earth to test you."  While on her way to purchase her Mega Millions ticket May 31, Palmer noticed a man sitting at an intersection holding up a sign asking for help and gave him $5.

"I'm always trying to help others," said Palmer.  "Maybe when I gave the man on the corner $5 it brought me good luck.  Winning $30,000 is truly amazing and a blessing from God."

The lucky winner didn't realize she had a winning ticket until she checked it last Monday.

"When I checked my ticket the machine read, 'Sign back of ticket.  See retailer,'" explained Palmer.  "I've never seen that before, so I took my ticket to a clerk and asked him to check it for me.  When the Lottery terminal wouldn't show the amount I had won, he printed out the winning numbers and helped me figure it out.  He was very helpful."

Once she knew the amount of her win, Palmer signed the back of her winning ticket and put it in her purse and headed to work.  Once she arrived at work, she called her mom and boyfriend Jarid Caldwell with the good news.

"Jarid didn't believe me at first," said Palmer.  "I didn't even show him the actual ticket until we were on our way to Topeka to claim the prize.  I kept it hidden in a small bag in a medical book."

"I've always rented places and my kids have had to move around a lot," said Palmer.  "Now we can get a house, which is what we've been praying for."

The winning ticket was purchased at QuikTrip 353, located at 110 S. Rock Rd. in Wichita.
