Ellinwood Resident Claims $10,000 Lottery Prize

Robert Burel of Ellinwood has a superstition about buying Kansas Lottery instant tickets. He only buys tickets that either end in "7" or add up to "7."

"This one was #12, so I wasn't going to get it, but I was feeling lucky so I went ahead and got it," said Burel." After scratching the ticket, Burel's lucky feeling paid off to the tune of a $10,000 win on a $10 $100,000 Crossword ticket!

"I knew immediately after scratching it that the ticket was a winner," Burel said. "I started counting words and when I got to 11, I got excited. Then there were 12, and finally 13, and I started to get all jittery."

Before calling anyone or getting too excited, Burel went to the store and scanned his ticket just to confirm his win. "When the ticket scanner said to redeem at the Lottery, that's when I for sure knew I had a big winner," he added.

Burel, a truck driver by trade, scratched off his winning ticket last week, but had to make a trip to Amarillo, Texas, before he could claim his ticket at Kansas Lottery headquarters in Topeka. "I signed the back of my ticket, and kept it on me the whole time for safekeeping," he said.

Burel said he plans to use his winnings to buy his own semi-truck, so he can go into business for himself as a driver.

The winning ticket was sold at Casey's General Store 1890 at 219 S. Grand Avenue in Lyons, Kansas. There are still three $100,000 top prizes and two $10,000 prizes remaining in the $100,000 Crossword instant game, as well as other cash prizes.
