Topeka Man Starts Labor Day Weekend Winning $25,000 Top Prize

Topeka resident Matthew Phelps had a great start to his Labor Day Weekend.  The 31-year-old purchased a Kansas Lottery $5 White Hot 5s instant scratch ticket before work September 2, and scratched his way to winning a $25,000 top prize!

"I stopped at the BP store across the street from where I work to pass the time before my shift started," said Phelps.  "I bought one of the White Hot 5s tickets. As I began scratching it I thought I had won $5,000, but as I continued playing the game I realized I had actually won $25,000!  It was very exciting."

After winning the $25,000 top prize, Phelps went to work where he shared his good news with his co-workers.

"Everyone really razzed me about winning," said Phelps.  "Having that winning ticket over the long weekend was nerve-wracking. I made sure it was out of sight and in a place where my kids and dogs couldn't find it.  This has been a good year. I've won two $1,000 cash prizes playing two other Kansas Lottery instant games."

Phelps, who has two young daughters, works for Petro Deli in Topeka. He plans to pay bills with his a portion of his winnings.

The winning ticket was purchased at Viking BP, located at 4700 NW Hunter's Ridge Circle in Topeka.  There is one $25,000 top prize remaining in the White Hot 5s instant scratch game as well as tens of thousands of other cash prizes.
