Hutchinson Resident Receives Big Surprise - Wins $20,000 Top Prize

Karla Stout of Hutchinson received a big surprise when claiming a Kansas Lottery $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch ticket. The 61-year-old drove to Lottery headquarters in Topeka thinking she had won a $2,000 cash prize.  However, when Lottery officials validated her winning ticket, she discovered she had actually won a $20,000 top prize!

"I can't believe this is happening," said the excited winner.  "I thought I was claiming a $2,000 prize and come to find out my ticket is worth $20,000! I've never won more than $100 on a lottery ticket.  This is unbelievable!"

According to Stout, when she first scratched her Bonus Crossword instant ticket, she thought she had won $10.  When she stopped at a local convenience store to have her winning ticket validated, Stout discovered her winning ticket was worth more than $10.

"When the store clerk scanned my ticket, he handed it back to me and said he couldn't validate it because I had won more than $599," said Stout.  "He wasn't able to tell me what the ticket was worth, so I looked it over again and realized I had missed a couple of letters.  The letters I missed allowed me to reveal several more words, which lead me to believe I had won $2,000.  I never imagined the ticket was worth $20,000!"

To her surprise, Stout revealed 10 words on her ticket to win a $20,000 top prize.  The excited winner was anxious to share the good news of her big win with her friends and co-workers.

"I'm the Activities Director at Good Samaritan in Hutchinson and when I told my co-workers I had won $2,000, they were all happy and excited for me," said Stout.  "They're going to be as surprised as I am when I tell them how much I won."

Stout and her husband Alan, who have been married 30 years, plan to pay bills with the winnings.

"We'll be close to debt free once we pay off our bills," said Stout.  "What a great feeling!  We'll even have enough left over to put into a savings account."

The winning ticket was purchased at Dillons 97, located at 3200 Plaza East Drive in Hutchinson.
