Illinois Couple Wins $10,000 Top Prize while Traveling through
An Illinois couple had an unforgettable trip through Kansas
this week. John and Cheryl Kurz of Waukegan, Illinois,
stopped for gas at a convenience store in Ottawa. While
inside the store, the Kansas Lottery's $2 Star Trek instant scratch
game caught their eye. Since Cheryl enjoys playing scratch
tickets, John bought her one to play while he drove on to Kansas
City. They were both shocked when they discovered they had a
winning ticket worth $10,000!
"When Cheryl told me she had won $10,000, I didn't believe her
at first," said Kurz. "She handed the ticket to my daughter
Chris and asked her to recheck it. When Chris agreed with
Cheryl that it was a $10,000 winning ticket, I stopped at the first
store I could find in Kansas City to have it checked."
After a store clerk informed the lucky winners they needed to
make a trip to Lottery headquarters in Topeka to claim their prize,
they decided to stay overnight in Kansas City.
"We didn't mind postponing our trip home to claim $10,000," Kurz
said laughing. "Cheryl looked at that ticket every hour until
we made it to Topeka this morning. I think she thought the
ticket wasn't real or something."
The Kurzes, who have been married 35 years, have two
children. They plan to pay bills with their winnings. Since
they won over $5,000, they did not receive their winnings today and
elected to have a check mailed to their home.
"Now we have something to look forward to when we get home,"
said Kurz. "And what a great vacation story we have to
