Independence Retiree Wins $25,000 Lottery Prize

James McDiarmid was feeling like a nobleman today when he came to Lottery headquarters with a winning Sir Cash-a-Lot instant scratch ticket. Or, if not a nobleman, just an extremely happy Kansan!

McDiarmid, 70, couldn't stop smiling when he handed over his $5 ticket, on which he had revealed a $25,000 prize! McDiarmid said he plays scratch tickets every day, but this past Tuesday was no ordinary day.

"I had purchased four tickets, including this one," the Independence resident told Lottery officials. "After revealing a $25,000 top prize, I checked the ticket three times to make sure I had what I thought I had. Then I quickly signed the back of the ticket and gave it to the clerk to check."

After the clerk verified his $25,000 prize, McDiarmid gave the ticket to his wife Becky for safekeeping. Becky was not only in charge of making sure the ticket stayed safe, she will also be in charge of how they're spending their prize money.

"Becky is letting me keep $100," said McDiarmid with a smile. "The rest we're using to pay off our truck." McDiarmid and his wife are retired.

The lucky $5 Sir Cash-a-Lot ticket was purchased at Jiffy Mart 1, located at 600 West Main Street in Independence.  McDiarmid's prize was the last $25,000 top prize in the Sir Cash-a-Lot game.
