Clay Center Resident Wins $20,000 Top Prize Playing $2
When Gavin Weis of Clay Center realized he won a $20,000 top prize
playing a Kansas Lottery Double
Bonus Crossword instant scratch ticket, he said he thought he
was "hallucinating." The thrilled 22-year-old won a top prize
by revealing 10 words on the $2 ticket he purchased on Mother's
"Lately I've been playing a lot of the $5 and $10 scratch
tickets, but yesterday I decided to try my luck on a $2 Crossword
instead," said Weis. "I bought two tickets and went home to
scratch them. When I found seven words on one of my tickets, I
thought I must be imagining things. I found a Sharpie pen and
began circling all the words I had found and, sure enough, I had
seven words. When I found three more words, I couldn't
believe it. I thought I was hallucinating or in a dream."
Weis said he was so excited about the big win, he couldn't sit
still and jumped around his house.
"After I calmed down a little, I had a friend check my ticket to
make sure I hadn't make a mistake," said Weis. "When she
agreed it looked like I had won, I decided to have it checked at a
store. When the clerk said I had to claim my prize at the
Lottery, I knew I hadn't made any mistakes and had won
The lucky winner said he plans to put his winnings to good
"I'm having a hard time believing how much I've won," said
Weis. "I keep thinking to myself what did I do to deserve
this? This is a once in a lifetime win and I'm putting it to
good use. I'm going to set up savings accounts for my two
kids, fix my truck and help out a good friend."
The winning ticket was purchased at Short Stop 22, located at
104 S. 6th in Clay Center. There are still 17 top prizes
of $20,000 available in the Double Bonus Crossword game.
