Happy Hays Resident Wins $20,000 Top Prize Playing Favorite Game

Every Friday, to celebrate the end of a week, Deborah Ross of Hays likes to purchase 10 of the Kansas Lottery's $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch tickets. Last week, Ross's weekly routine changed and so did her luck after she decided to purchase tickets a few days early. The 64-year-old revealed all 10 words on the first ticket she scratched and won a top prize worth $20,000!

"The only lottery game I like to play is the $2 Bonus Crossword," said Ross.  "If a store doesn't have them, I won't buy another game.  I'll stop somewhere else until I find them.  Last Tuesday, while I was at the grocery store, I decided to go ahead and buy my tickets for the week.  I usually wait until Friday, but I'm glad I didn't this time.  I took the tickets home and the first one I scratched won $20,000! I couldn't believe it!  It took a while to get myself composed because I was crying and hysterical."

After calming down from the excitement of winning a top prize, Ross recounted the words on her ticket to make sure she hadn't made a mistake.

"I was so excited the words on my ticket kept running together, so I wrote each of them down," said Ross.  "Once I was sure
I had 10 words, I called my family.  The next day, I told my boss and after that word spread quickly.  Everyone has been very happy for me.  I lost my husband almost a year ago, so this win is extra special."

Ross has had good luck playing Bonus Crossword instant scratch tickets.  She has won several $100 prizes, but this is the first time she's won a $20,000 top prize.

"I put my ticket in a fire proof lockbox for safekeeping until I could take a personal day from work to claim my ticket," said Ross.
"I'm going to Kansas City and have a celebration dinner with my daughter and two grandchildren.  We're going to have a great time."

Ross, who is an administrative assistant at Lincoln Elementary in Hays, has three grown children and two grandchildren. She was undecided how she would spend her winnings.

The winning ticket was purchased at Dillons 61, located at 1902 Vine St. in Hays.  There are 12 top prizes remaining in the $2 Bonus Crossword instant scratch game.
