Girard Resident stops for Breakfast, Wins $20,000

"Holy crap!"  Those were the first words Girard resident Alden Allen said yesterday when he scratched off a $20,000 top prize on his $2 Bonus Crossword instant ticket. Bonus Crossword is Allen's favorite game and he plays often.

Allen explained to Lottery officials how he stopped at the store early in the morning to pick up five Bonus Crossword tickets and biscuits and gravy and then proceeded on to work, where he scratched his tickets before "clocking in" for the day.

"I got to the fourth ticket and started freakin' out," Allen said. "I thought I had uncovered nine words, so I made a copy of the ticket to show my son, who works at the same place I do. As he was double-checking my words, I found a tenth word, "taxi," which made the ticket worth $20,000!"

Allen quickly called his wife Gena to share the good news.

"I said, 'Can you get off work tomorrow? Because I'm going to Topeka, whether you can go with me or not!'"

As it turned out, Gena Allen was able to get off work and accompanied her husband to Lottery headquarters to claim his big prize.  She doesn't play the lottery herself, but termed her husband's win "awesome."  The Allens plan to use the prize money to purchase a new vehicle.

"We had to rent a car to get here," they said. "We didn't trust either of our vehicles to make the trip."  Alden Allen sells and services appliances at Heidrick's in Girard.  Gena Allen works at the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center in Greenbush. The Allens have been married 30 years and have two grown children.

The lucky ticket was purchased at Mini-Stop, located at 100 W. Saint John St. in Girard.
