Powerball's 25th Anniversary
It happened 25 years ago - April 22, 1992 - and Kansas Lottery players were a big part of it!  This Saturday marks the 25th Anniversary of the very first Powerball drawing. Kansas was among a group of only 15 lotteries participating in the game at that time. Today 47 lotteries offer Powerball. With Powerball drawn twice a week for 25 years, Saturday's drawing will be the 2,610th Powerball drawing since the game started.

Powerball in Kansas…
Over the past 25 years, Kansas Lottery players have celebrated a plethora of Powerball wins. Kansas has sold nearly 28 millionwinningPowerball tickets since 1992. A lucky few have even hit "the big one," becoming multi-millionaires and changing their lives forever.

  • Kansas players have won 11 Powerball jackpots.
  • 20 Kansas Powerball players have won $1 million or $2 million.
  • The largest Powerball jackpot hit in Kansas was $96.6 million, won by Donald Damon of Great Bend on November 11, 2009.
  • The most recent Powerball jackpot winner in Kansas was a Johnson County resident who claimed $50 million on December 19, 2012.

Kansas Lottery Executive Director Terry Presta, who also heads up the Powerball Marketing and Promotions Committee for member lotteries, says Powerball is easily the most recognized and most played lottery game in the world.

"With several redesigns over the years, Powerball has experienced 25 years of growth, which culminated in January 2016 with a $1.586 billion jackpot and reignited interest in this iconic brand," said Presta.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday, April 22, is an estimated $90 million with a cash option of $56 million.

The Kansas Lottery reminds players to submit their winning and non-winning Powerball tickets in the new Kansas Lottery PlayOn® Players Loyalty program to earn points for drawing entries and a chance to win cash and other prizes!
