New Game Wins Wamego Resident $10,000
TOPEKA, KAN. – On Tuesday Christeen Amsden, store manager of Gas 4 Less in Manhattan, opened a new pack of $2 Tough Truck instant scratch tickets to fill an empty slot in her store’s lottery dispenser. When she returned to work Wednesday morning, no one had tried the game, so she decided to try her luck and purchased five tickets. Much to her surprise, she won a $10,000 top prize on the last ticket she scratched.
“When I realized I’d won, I thought holy heck,” said Amsden. “I went and got one of my store employees and had her check my ticket for me. When the machine said, ‘Claim at Lottery,’ I couldn’t believe it.”
After signing the back of her winning ticket, Amsden called her boss.
“I called my boss, who has another store in Topeka, to let him know I was leaving early,” said Amsden. “I asked him if he wanted to know why I was leaving early and he didn’t seem interested until I told him I won $10,000. He was excited for me and asked that I stop at the Topeka store after I claimed my prize.”
Her next call was to her boyfriend Pat Armor, who accompanied Amsden to Lottery headquarters in Topeka.
“I called Pat and told him I was leaving work early and we were taking a trip to Topeka,” said Amsden. “I asked him to guess how much I won and he guessed $4. He kept asking me if I was sure I’d won $10,000. After I explained I had done everything to verify it, he believed me.”
Amsden plans to share half her winnings with Armor. She plans to pay bills with her share of the prize money.
The winning ticket was purchased at Gas 4 Less, located at 917 N. 3rd St. in Manhattan.
