Lottery Supports Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race with $2 Scratch Ticket

TOPEKA, KAN. – The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race is a very exciting and unique event, embracing the heritage of the Santa Fe Trail and what it means to Kansas history. For the second year in a row, the Kansas Lottery is helping publicize the race with a special instant scratch ticket by the same name.

The new $2 Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race ticket will be on sale at Lottery retailers starting this week. Players can win up to $10,000 instantly on the ticket. They will also have a chance to win one of two trips to Santa Fe, New Mexico, by entering their non-winning tickets into a second-chance drawing. Each grand prize trip package is valued at approximately $10,000 and includes round trip airfare for two to Santa Fe, 4 days and 3 nights’ hotel accommodations, $5,000 cash and mandatory withholding taxes.

The deadline for mailed entries is the morning mail pickup in Great Bend on Sept. 9. No later than 5 p.m. Sept. 9, players may also deposit entries into any receptacle specifically designated by the Lottery for such purpose. 2008 marks the second year for The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race. This year’s event is a 515-mile endurance ride completed over a 14-day period. It is open to all breeds, and is sanctioned by the American Endurance Ride Conference. The events will start in Wagon Mound, New Mexico on Aug. 31 and end in Council Grove, Kan. on Sept. 13.

The race will include Race Villages where teams will be able to stop overnight. They will cover 30 acres and include first aid, refreshments, entertainment and more. Race Villages are planned for several Kansas locations, including Dodge City, Elkhart, Lyons, and Council Grove. The Lottery plans to hold its second-chance drawing at the Council Grove Race Village at approximately 7 p.m. on Sept. 13.

“We’re very pleased to again be able to support an event that will bring thousands of visitors to Kansas,” Lottery Executive Director Ed Van Petten said. “The ticket was a big success for us last year and we anticipate that our players will be excited to see it back again this year.”

The Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race game is the latest example of the Lottery’s Made in Kansas tickets that promote Kansas business, industry and tourism by offering Kansas-themed grand prizes in second-chance drawings.
