Lottery Commission Extends Deadline for NE Gaming Zone Applications;
Approves Rules and Regulations for Electronic Gaming at Racetracks
TOPEKA, KAN. – The five-member Kansas Lottery Commission today unanimously approved a request by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County to extend by 90 days the deadline for applications to be submitted for a Lottery Gaming Facility (Casino) in the Northeast Gaming Zone. The new deadline for the Northeast Gaming Zone is December 31, 2007, and replaces the previous deadline of October 1, 2007.
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County requested the extension in a letter to the Lottery Commission, saying it anticipated a great number of casino applications and needed more time to consider zoning and other issues.
In other action, the Lottery Commission also voted to approve a set of Rules and Regulations for Electronic Gaming Machines at Racetrack Gaming Facilities. The Rules and Regulations state that Wichita Greyhound Park and the Woodlands in Kansas City, Kan., shall each be allocated 800 electronic gaming machines, with 600 electronic gaming machines allocated for Camptown Greyhound Park in Frontenac.
The Rules and Regulations restrict to 2,200 the number of electronic gaming machines allocated for placement at all racetrack gaming facilities until Lottery Gaming Facility (Casino) contracts become binding in all gaming zones authorized by law, at which time an additional 600 machines may be allocated among the tracks.
The Rules and Regulations approved today by the Kansas Lottery Commission must also be approved by the Kansas Attorney General before they become final.
Voters in the Southeast, Northeast and Southwest gaming zones have already authorized expanded gaming in their counties. In the South Central Gaming Zone, voters in Sedgwick County must still approve expanded gaming in order for slots to be placed at Wichita Greyhound Park. If Sedgwick County voters approve expanded gaming, a casino could be placed in Sumner or Sedgwick County. Sumner County voters have already given their approval. Voters in Sedgwick County go to the polls on August 7, 2007.
The Kansas Lottery Commission is scheduled to hold its next regular meeting via teleconference on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at 11:15 a.m.
