Kansas City Woman Wins $10,000 Mega Millions Prize

Sherie Dazey of Kansas City, Kansas had her eyes on the $977 million Mega Millions jackpot when she purchased a $2 Quick Pick ticket for the March 22 drawing. The jackpot was not hit, so Dazey didn’t even bother to check her tickets that day.

When she finally got around to checking her stack of tickets, she found one that said to redeem in Topeka. Finally, she looked at the numbers and realized she had matched four numbers and the Mega Ball for a $10,000 win! The winning numbers in the March 22 drawing were 3 – 8 – 31 – 35 – 44 Mega Ball 16.

“The ticket was in a stack in my wallet. I was just carrying it around for a couple weeks,” said Dazey with a laugh. “I’m going to try and check tickets more often going forward!”

It was in a gas station where Dazey figured out just what she had been hauling around without knowing. “The machine said to “redeem in Topeka”, but I thought it had to be a mistake, so I scanned it again,” Dazey said. “When it said it again I just put it back in my wallet and left and called my husband.”

“Everyone thought it was an April Fools prank at first,” Dazey added. “It was right after April Fools day so no one believed me until I showed them the ticket.”

Dazey said the win comes at a great time, as they just had repair work done to the foundation of their home. “I figure that is where the winnings will go,” she added.

The winning ticket was sold at QuikTrip 226 at 20605 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee. The next Mega Millions drawing is tonight for an estimated $284 million. Tickets start at $2, and are available at every Kansas Lottery retailer.
